Writing an Effective Classification Essay

classification essay guide

A classification essay requires a writer to organize things into categories. Writing an essay on classification can become easier if the basic principles are understood.

Writing the Classification Essay

The first step in writing a classification essay is to understand the various categories that are possible. For example, if it is required to sort out a bunch of papers, one needs to understand the possible ways to classify it. In this case, the papers could be filed, or thrown away. Some papers such as pending bills might need immediate action while other papers may belong to someone else. Understanding the possible ways to categorize becomes the first step. Hence, to write an effective classification essay, one needs to concentrate on how to effectively classify the things into categories.

Not a single critical category should be left out otherwise the classification essay won't be as effective. At the same time, adding too many irrelevant categories will not make an essay on classification any more effective. Classification should be based on one principle. In the example of the bunch of papers discussed earlier, the classification is based on "what is to be done with the papers". The classification could also be based on which department the paper belongs to or which color the paper is and then the categories would be formed accordingly. With categories based on a single principle, one can be sure to be able to achieve an effective essay on classification.

Another important thing to keep in mind is to give equal importance to all the categories in terms of quantity of content or examples. The only exception to this would be the most important or popular category that would need more elaboration than others.

Keeping these things in mind will help one to write an effective classification essay.
