Yesterday, your professor assigned a task to you and you wrote a paper concerning globalization and world climate changes. This might have been an opinion essay, or a comparative one. The most often used examples of academic essays are the so-called 5 paragraph essays that include:
- Opinion essays;
- Comparative essays;
- Argumentative essays;
- Critical (reflective) essays.
Opinion essays
Among these examples of academic essays, only opinion essays do not require research work and focus on the supported author’s attitude towards the essay topic.
Comparative essays
Another example of an academic essay is the comparative essay that involves research necessary to gather data and compare two or more books, movies, historic events or personalities, etc.
Argumentative essays
Such an example of an academic essay as an argumentative essay is similar to the opinion essay but the major difference between the two is that an essay needs to use strong arguments to explain the opinion on a phenomenon to be called argumentative.
Critical (reflective) essays
Finally, critical (reflective) essays take a notable place among examples of academic essays being the works in which an author critically assesses or reflects on a phenomenon, person, or event considering its pros and cons.

There are also academic essays that differ from the above considered types, mainly in their purpose. These examples of academic essays include the works written for exams or scholarship contests. They use the same structure of a 5-paragraph essay but are dedicated to a specific topic and might have stricter format and content requirements than other examples of academic essays.
